My goal for this month is to retain a top mythic finish so that I can qualify for the Mythic championship Qualifier Weekend and so that I am free to play all kinds of nonsense next month into mythic. The thing is, I have a real, 9 to 5 day job which prevents me from playing most of the day. Luckily, I got a decent computer at work and not a lot of things to do so I have some spare time to play from work! Luckily, Wizards provided us with a play mode that can be fast and efficient for climbing.

The deck is similar in power level to its Bo3 variant. As far as card choices go, I would definitely main deck a Kaya as she is an extra source of lifegain plus it provides for a faster win condition that Teferi should a game go the long way. Multiple copies of Moment of Craving are required in this meta, so I would cut on the Cast Downs to make room for that.

Also, Negates usually find good value, as most Monored lists run Experimental Frenzy. Getting their Light up the Stage is good as well. I would stay away from cards like Chromium or other win conditions of the sort. The elephant in the room, the boogey man. When queuing bo1 ladder, most of the times you are met with an opponent that starts with a turn one Mountain. The deck is cheap, fast and efficient, thus making it a prime choice for laddering.

I will admit it was my most played deck overall this month. I will also admit that after a point, my relationship with Monored has become something more than a means to an end. I started playing it because of how efficient it was but I got addicted pretty fast. The matchup I lost to the most was Esper on the draw and, of course, the mirror on the draw.

Basically, if you lose the coin flip you lose a significant amount of percentage points with this deck. That is true for most matchups in bo1 but in Monored this is highlighted even more.

At the time this article is being written, I am on top Mythic and going for 1 with it. I would never play Lava Coil in this deck. And these 2 are the most common matchups.

Electrostatic field has been good for me, especially in the mirror but in the end, Steam-Kin is a raw power card and that is what I want. Experimental Frenzy is another card I wish to tackle. There are games that only Frenzy can win you. It is an amazing card versus Esper. It is pretty good in the mirror if you resolve it on a stalemate.

Apart from that, I think the card is worse than advertised. It makes the deck slower overall, which is something i do not like all that much.

If you include frenzy in your deck, you end up relying on it to finish up the game. Against a prepared opponent that is not likely to happen. On the other hand, Risk Factor has less of an upside but makes the deck faster, which is what I want. Not in Bo1 though. I just attacked them and kept sending burn to their face until they died. If you resolve Frenzy and you are ahead or on equal terms then sure, you are most likely going to win. But that is not always the case.

Especially in games where you get to go second. Or 2 lands in a row. For that reason, I prefer Risk Factor over it.

I was only able to rank to gold in the first season with weak decks. This season I managed to build a nice mono red deck that plowed through everything I can beat it sometimes, but that annoying deck usually just slow plays me to my doom I'm just constantly living in fear of a board wipe to end me lol.

I want to build a new deck to try and push through these control decks Being that I'm pretty new I don't have a ton of depth in my cards, so I sort of have to prioritize what I get and build towards 1 thing I don't have the luxury of trying out different strategies to see what works yet. Do you mean actual control with counters, because that deck is virtually dead thanks to all the super friends decks primarily thanks to little Teferi making counterspells useless.

If you mean the Super Friends version it's actually midrange. It's probably the most well rounded deck but it does lose badly to the Green Ramp decks that play with Nissa. And when you say Arena, are you playing Bo1 or Bo3?

That also severely impacts what you should play. Just playing the regular Bo1 ranked. I guess I've seen a fair bit of both regular control with tons of removal AND 5 color super friends. I actually went on a nice run today I need to immediately recognize what they're doing, throw everything at their life points, and if it gets past turn 5 I'm probably done.

Standard Denizen. With limited resources, I find it difficult to recommend an investment. The deck I think of as having a chance against both in Bo1 is Gruul. Here is the Sally's thread, but there is more discussion on Reddit here.

For many players, this was an opportunity to play higher stakes games in a format they were more familiar with. Unlike those players, I found myself a little conflicted.

In best-of-one BO1games go faster due to the lack of time spent side-boarding, which gives the ability to play more games in less time. If your goal is to reach Mythic as fast as possible, playing more games than you have to is not the best recipe for success. My goal was to reach Mythic in the second preseason after getting to Diamond 2 in the first preseason, just two tiers away from my target.

I can happily say that this goal was achieved. Wondering how you can get to Mythic yourself? Beginning the climb from Bronze is difficult, especially on a budget.

Figuring out how to spend wildcards becomes a game itself. Just a few incorrect decisions can set you back weeks. In these ranks, many players are on a budget or playing brews. Players trying to play two or more colors will likely be using dual lands that always enter the battlefield tapped, which will slow them down.

Taking this into consideration can give you a serious advantage regarding deck choice. An aggressive deck can punish decks that struggle to get off the ground. Picking an aggressive deck in these ranks is my recommendation. Mono-Red requires zero mythic wildcards and no rare lands. Mono-White is also a good choice, but slightly more costly. These are my top picks. Here is the Mono-Red list that took me deep through Platinum and Diamond:. Burn spells provide you with lots of inevitability, while doubling as removal spells of your own in the right situation.

Mono-Red can play both an aggressive and controlling game, making it a very good choice in any tier. This might be the hardest climb in the entire ranked system.

Aggressive strategies are still powerful here, but punish far less opponents. The question now becomes whether or not you want to become someone who counters the meta-game. Make sure the card s work well alongside other cards, resulting in a consistent, coherent strategy.

A great example is Esper Hero, a deck that got me through a few tiers in Platinum:. The deck contains cards that are well suited to beat many different types of decks, including aggro, mid-range and combo. At the same time, the deck also contains Thought Erasure and Thief of Sanitywhich pick apart slower strategies. Initial excitement focused around Phoenix of Ashand while this is a strong card, Anax, Hardened in the Forge has been the real hero of this deck. Mono Red is statistically the best deck in Bo1 and makes up by far the biggest chunk of the meta.

It is the deck against which all others are measured in Bo1, and has had pretty good success in the non-Bo1 tournament scene as well with a win at Magicfest Lyon. Mono White Devotion has staked a claim to relevancy in Bo1. It is a flexible deck based around the lifegain and Devotion synergy introduced to Standard with Theros Beyond Death. The deck is quite interesting because it can be aggressive, like the traditional white weenie, or even a more midrange build suitable for longer games and resilient to disruption.

Either way, the deck is primed for BO1 currently because it can fend off the opposing aggressive decks quite well due to the lifegain offered by many of its cards.

BO1 Esper Doom by CovertGoBlue – #279 Mythic – Theros Beyond Death Standard

Sacrifice strategies received some new cards in Theros Beyond Death that are definitely worth experimenting, and could get stronger over time. The absence of Azorius Control has been good for business.

Temur Adventures is probably the second most common deck in the Bo1 meta, though Mono White Devotion may overtake it at some levels. The results at DreamHack Anaheim and overall ladder performance by Aaron Gertler, have been impressive and lend to its legend. Still, this is a complicated deck to play, if only because there is a lot of risk of timing out for an inexperienced player.

The deck creates enormous card advantage via Lucky Clover and Edgewall Innkeeperwhich cannot be matched by other decks in the format. The weakness of the deck lies in its speed, but Fae of WishesBrazen Borrower and Bonecrusher Giant ensures it can at least have a chance against aggro decks.

If Clover drops on turn 2, this deck can take out any aggro deck on the list on their best days. There are two main builds of Gruul in the current Standard environment, Aggro or Adventures. In BO1, we lean towards the straight up Gruul Aggro deck as it is more explosive — you care less about the card advantage that the Adventure package provides and just want to end the game as soon as possible. Meanwhile Sultai went with hand hate Shockingly!

My gut says there is still a lot of evolving going on here. Theros Beyond Death has completely changed Azorius Control, adding many powerful cards and upgrades the decked desperately needed.

It adds a four mana board wipe, one of the best finishers of our time with Dream Trawler and a whole bunch of Sagas such as The Birth of Meletis and Elspeth Conquers Death that provide great value as the game goes on. This is the cream of the Control crop and with the right mix of sweepers, a good player can do well with it.

That said, the deck has slipped far down the list to tier 3 as Esper Control and Bant Ramp have taken up almost all of its meta-share recently. Theros Beyond Death was not a great set for Mono Green Stompy but it has of late enjoyed a bit of a resurgence. Sorry Stompmeister. Still, we have four mono-colored decks in the Top 10, I think that says some impressive things for the metagame right now.

I think this deck needs just the right build to be successful, which means it is probably too fragile to become effective in wide circulation with such a chaotic metagame. The Duo Standard format is unusual. You bring two BO1 Standard decks and they can be as similar or different as you want. For game 1, each player gets assigned one of the decks at random and flips a coin to see who plays first.

In game 2, the person who lost the first coin flip gets to play first and both players use the second deck. The one key takeaway from this is that you actually never control the matchups.

I started by writing down a list of cards I thought would attack the format from a different angle. For example, when the metagame consists mostly of Esper, Mono-Red, Mono-White, other aggro decks, and basically no midrange, the one noticeable difference from normal Standard is that there is no Vivien Reid. So outside of counterspells and Conclave Tribunalno one can really interact with artifacts. If you can flip the Gateway, you get to kill your opponent with Banefire pretty easily.

As much as I wanted this deck to work, it had some flaws. I was happy with Banefire though and wanted to put it in an aggressive deck. It also refills your hand later in the game for its spectacle cost.

The options are truly endless there, especially if you play a bunch of Treasure Maps and can get any color mana from the Treasures. Overall, I quite liked this deck. Probably the most played deck in the format. There are two versions: either you are playing with Experimental Frenzy or Risk Factor. The deck is fast, efficient, and gets away with only playing 18 lands by abusing the algorithm.

Experimental Frenzy can go over the top of other decks.

Mythic Esper Doom Standard Bo1

The best part about the deck is that your plan is always the same against every deck and your removal can be pointed at your opponent, so you never have any dead cards in any matchup.

Chainwhirler gives you a good chance at beating the White Weenie and Llanowar Elves decks. Overall, I can definitely see why this deck is so popular. Against other non-blue control decks, you have a huge advantage in Teferi, Azcanta, and counterspells.

The mirror is a little bit random, because both players have so many dead cards in all the removal spells. Whoever gets an Azcanta or Teferi going usually runs away with the game pretty easily. Beating a flipped Azcanta is almost impossible.
